Should preference for immigrating to the United States and Canada be given to indivudal siwth special job skills, or should priority be given to reunification of family members?  Should quotas be raised to meet increasing demand for both types of immigrants?  Why or why not?

*"...individuals with special job..."

I believe that priority should be given to those with family members over those with special job skills, since the U.S. has plenty professionals. Those with family are more important to me.

What swings my decision for quotas being raised is weather or not the amount of illegal immigrants will decline because of it. If so, then I support raising them 100%. If not, I don't see the reason for bothering with it.

Unlike "grunt work" there are plenty of Americans that would want specialized jobs. In this immigrants are taking away jobs causing me to think that immigrants with families should be a higher priority.

As for raising quotas I think it may be necessary considering all the people that come illegally anyway.

I must agree with Troy that if that doesn't fix the problem then there is no point.

I'd say start having a higher priority on the reunification of family members. With the amount of countries losing these special job skilled persons and we gain them the more that country will hurt in the long run. Also we have enough of our own people who can learn to do these jobs. If we start helping out more families, the U.S. will look like a more good and helpful country. If raising the quotas helps us in any way I don't see why not. This could help us by having less illegal immigrants, but it also means more complaining from U.S. citizens saying that their aren't any jobs. I say raise them. No harm should come from it.

I agree with Jacob. Specialized jobs are being taken from Americans. We should only worry about reunifying families so our own people(Americans)can learn to do these jobs.

Reuniting with family members is more important. Family should always come before work. by putting family first we will make our country look better and give Americans a better opportunity for jobs.

I agree with Jacob American want to do specialized jobs, but immigrants are taking these jobs away.

I think the ones with family should be the priority only if they are going to reunite with them. Like Troy said we do have a lot of professionals. I think in a couple of years the quota will get raised; because the the government will realize how awesome we are and will raise the quotas. So they can show to all the immigrants how awesome we are by letting more come in at a time. I don't think we should raise the quota; because it takes away more American jobs. Soon we will have a bunch of Asians teaching us.

I agree with Nathan; because families should be able to get reunited. For families it may have easily been five years since they seen each other. Another point I agree on the statement,"If raising the quotas helps us in any way" well then I'm for it.

I think that reuniting families should be of more importance over immigrants with specialized skills because we already have Americans doing those types of jobs. I think it is important for families to be reunited. Immigrants want to come to America for job opportunities and to ultimately try and have the "American Dream," but what kind of dream is it when you don't even have your family to share it with you? On a completely different note, I believe that the process for becoming an American citizen should be shortened somehow. Five years is a long time to wait to become a citizen and that is why there are so many illegal immigrants. Some people can't afford to live in poverty for another five years while waiting to become an American citizen and get the opportunities that we have, so they have no choice but to come here illegally. But yes, I agree with everyone saying the quota should be raised because it has the potential to lower the number of illegal immigrants. I also think if the process of becoming a U.S. citizen is shortened then, with the raised quota, the number of illegal immigrants is sure to go down.

individuals with special skills should be taken into consideration more because they help the U.S. by advancing our studies and skills. reuniting families is less important because some family members may be worthless, if not harmful to the country's population and economy.

i disagree with everyone so far, but jacob has a good point in saying that Americans should be capable of doing the harder, specialized tasks.

I agree that having citizens with specialized skills is a top priority, however, family is an important factor in a society.
I agree with Chase because if we allow immigrants with special job skills to immigrate to the U.S, then we would be stronger as a nation.
If we only let people immigrate to the U.S to reunite with their families, the people could possibly have no job skills and have no contribution to our society.

I believe that reuniting familes is far more important then having more people with special jobs skills. The United States is an advanced country, and we already have plenty of scientists and other individuals with speical skills. If people are moving to a better country, they should be happy and comfortable here and not have to worry about their loved ones. I think the quotas should be raised for both because we don't want to fall behind and want to keep people with special skills coming but, but we want to wlecome others that want to be with their families.

I agree with Paige, because people come to America expecting things to be better, but without the support of their families, they can't truely live the "American Dream"

I think that specialized skills should come over family becuase that would make our country improve and if you are reuniting families they could be selling drugs or doing something not useful for our country. If other courties get mad for us taking there smart people they should make their own economies better. But that does creat the problem of us citizens not getting the jobs they want. I think the quota will be and should be raised soon.

I agree with Paige, it shouldnt take 5 years to become a citizen that is crazy. They come here for a better life to help us out and we are only making them even poorer in some cases.

I believe that the United States and Canada should take higher priority in taking in migrants to reunify families beacuse the U.S. and Canada are already advanced enough and we have many people living here that have exceptionally talented skills. Also, the United States is progressing ridiculously fast. I agree with Paige that living the "American Dream" is far more important and sharing it with your family is part of that dream. The U.S. will make themselves look good if we bring in more immigrants to reunify families instead of taking in smart people and rejecting people that may not have been gifted with as much intelligence.

With increasing quotas, they should probably be raised because as Paige and Allysa said waiting five years to become a citizen is ridiculous and some people might not even be able to survive that long. But no matter what, we will still be having illegal immigrants.

i definetly agree with chase

Americans had to get these "special job skills" from somewhere. its not fair to have them work for so long to get these skills to just get the jobs taken away by immigrants. you shouldnt be having families without at least one family member with a special job skill

America is nothing without family. If people want to immigrate to the US, they need to be looking at people who need to be reunited with their families, not who have "special talents". I'm sure that we have plenty of people here in America that can do these special talented jobs but people are nothing without their family.

I agree with Shelby, Paige, and Allysa that the quotas should be raised because people are waiting to long to come into the country legally.

i think the quotas should be lifted to an extent, because if we let everybody come in when they want, then the us would start to get over-populated and become very crowded. the quotas should be revised and reconsidered.

i agree with jacob that with the immigrants taking these jobs, it seems to me that the immigrants families are more important and i also agree with mackenzie because america is nothing without family and that is the reason why immigrants are coming to america, all they want is a better life for their family.
